The exquisite beauty of wide-open savannahs, abundant wildlife and spectacular vistas mark this as a truly majestic wilderness destination. Situated a convenient short few hours’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Safari Plains redefines luxury in the bush. With its high ceilinged dining room, elegant lounge, impressive bar and relaxing spa, we are proud to offer all our guests, be they seasoned travellers, bushveld connoisseurs, families or first-time African explorers, an unforgettable experience.
ACCOMMODATION:
Our safari-style suites offer utmost comfort and an opulent ambience with private timber wrap-around decks. There are six luxury suites that offer a larger main area and a private sala, which is perfect for lounging on a lazy afternoon.
SAFARIS PLAINS EXPERIENCE:
The varied habitats on the Greater Mabula Game Reserve provide ideal conditions for an astounding selection of large mammals including the Big Five. Other wildlife includes the nocturnal brown hyena, jackal, cheetah and a variety of smaller, less often seen predators. Our savannah plains further sustain iconic species such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, red hartebeest, eland, gemsbok, warthog and giraffe.
With the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and whiny – more than 300 species of birds, 60 species of mammals, countless species of insects, reptiles and plants, the Greater Mabula Game Reserve offers an exciting destination for even the most decerned traveller.
Guests are invited to join our qualified guides on two-game drive safaris per day; one during the early morning, when the 12,000 hectares Greater Mabula Game Reserve is bathed in the glorious morning sunlight, and one of the late afternoon when, after watching the game, the setting sun heralds the delightful and imminent stop for sundowners. Each game drive is conducted in open luxury Land Cruisers and provides a unique opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat and learn more about their behaviour, and role in the eco-system.
The Waterberg environment is seasonal, and the landscape changes dramatically both after and prior, to rain. The deep green thickets and lush grasslands, replenished by summer rains, dramatically transform our bushveld into the greys, yellows and browns at the onset of autumn and winter.
Observing a large herd of impala and zebra feeding on the plains is an iconic African experience. As is the sight of a herd of elephants, traipsing across the open grasslands or crashing through thick bush to feed off the trees. Stop along one of the dams to search for hippopotamuses and crocodiles, seemingly floating just below the water surface, or search for one of Africa’s most elegant spotted big cats; the cheetah.
Our resident lion pride may be lazing under an African thorn tree or on the move in the late afternoon light. Bask in the excitement of coming across our magnificent Kalahari males with their black manes, or the coalition of powerful females.
Each safari drive is different and will reveal nature at her own pace and discretion.
