Places Visited
Candidasa | Tirta Gangga | Mount Seraya | Pura Kehen | Ubud | Baturiti | Bedugal | Munduk
-Wander through the pristine gardens at Tirta Gangga. This former royal palace is home to fountains, stone sculptures and tropical trees. There are public pools, too, so bring your cossie as there may be enough time for a quick dip.
-Stop for lunch near Mount Seraya. This thousand-metre-plus volcano on Bali’s east coast offers an Insta-worthy backdrop when you pop in for lunch at a cosy restaurant. And, if the weather’s kind, you’ll have panoramic views of the Lombok Strait to go with it.
-Continue onto Pura Kehen. This Hindu temple’s one of the prettiest in Bali, and it dates back to at least the 13th century. The intricate stone carvings and Chinese porcelain collections are two of the highlights here, but perhaps more impressive is the enormous banyan tree outside, which is believed to be more than 400 years old.
-Start with a visit to Yeh Pulu Temple. The standout here is the 25-metre-long stone wall that dates back to the 14th century. It’s got ornate carvings running along it, which show the lives of the Balinese people from yesteryear.
-Head inside Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave as it’s known. The origins of this place are up for debate, but the intricate carvings and statues make it one of Ubud’s go-to spots. And to enter, you’ll step through the mouth of a menacing demon.
-Be wowed by Gunung Kawi Temple. It was built in the 11th century as a memorial, and its 10 shrines are carved into sheer rockface that stands almost eight-metres-high.
-Enjoy the peace and quiet at Goa Garba Temple. This 12th-century cave temple’s on a steep cliff on the banks of the River Pakerisan, in the heart of the jungle. Unlike many of Ubud’s other temples, it’s escaped most of the tourist attention.
-Wander around Ubud’s art galleries and museums, then barter for bargains at the traditional art market in the heart of town.
-Visit the botanical gardens in Bedugal. This mountain village sits on Lake Bratan, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore the gardens and the local market, which hones in on fresh, local produce.
-Take a light hike in mountainous Munduk – this quiet town’s renowned for its natural, unspoilt beauty. At the end of your rainforest walk, you’ll take a boat trip across twin lakes Buyan and Tamblingan to a temple by the waterfront.
